I was not able to post this to your website....
I heard about your trip as I was boarding a floatplane in Whitehorse for my own yukon hunt last year. Mine turned out a bit better than yours.
I had a similar experience to yours in '06 with another Yukon outfitter. Poor equipment and a guide that had no prior experience with a bowhunter and had never set foot in the hunt area translated into no opportunity on that hunt. I did a bit more homework for my '08 hunt, made sure I was very clear with my expectations AND made great effort to understand how the outfitter operated their hunts. Once in the bush, I also helped set up camp for most of the 1st day, split firewood, hobbled and fed horses, washed dishes, made coffee, started the stove every night, hauled water, helped my guide skin and quarter my moose and butchered the meat after returning to base camp and did pretty much anything I felt I could to make MY hunt the best experience it could be. OH, and we painted the cabin after I killed my moose. I LOVED every minute of it! All the work that went into the hunt allowed me to be a part of the hunt, rather than simply the assassin of the animal. The actual kill was simply a PART of the experience. I also felt that the more i was able to assist my guide in his daily duties, the more time we would have to concentrate on the hunt. It also helped that my guide was a Superman Cowboy and worked like noone I've ever met. He also knew the area and had been with the outfit for many years. I knew this prior to booking the hunt.
It is unfortunate that you had such a poor experience, but after reading your reports, as well as the email exchanges between you and the YOA, it seems to me that you could have perhaps planned better, especially considering that the $$ spent on the trip was significant to you. Some folks could write off the $25K and move on. I, unfortunately, am not one of them and have learned to do as much research as possible and sometimes, you can't do enough.
I hope your future hunts work out better. There ARE some good Yukon outfitters. Well, at least one.......
You should post my comments on your website, since posting only total bashes of YSO paints quite an unbalanced view. I am not defending the Watsons, and actually seriously considered hunting with them. (I am obviously satisfied with my choice). In the end, I decided NOT to hunt with the Watsons mostly because of their inexperience with their area. They also seem to specialize in capitalizing on their sheep hunts and might not give their moose areas and methods the same attention.

Hi JP, My name is Louis,
I got your story on explore north Blog http://www.explorenorth.com/wordpress/
I went for 2 camping trip to Yukon, Alaska and NWT it's a very beautyfull contry.
Sorry about my bad English writing I do much better in French.
About your 2007 Yukon hunt, it reminded me a similar thing 15 years ago at a bear hunt.
I got screw up by an outfitter, at that time I was just getting out of school and it took a lot of effort and money saving to do this first hunting trip.
I hunt since the age of 13 years old,
I get my deer with a bow every year since the age of 19.
All my hunting trips are now organize with other hunters who invited each other to there home place.
I don’t know the right term in English but I would try to translate to: (Hunt trade). Here on the south part of Quebec we have the spring season (wild turkey hunt), I guide 2 or 3 guess and in return they take me to other hunt such as deer hunting in Saskatchewan.
We are a small group of 5 hunters who share there contacts and the network grows each year.
Good luck with your Yukon screw driver...

JP, another hunt from hell. I feel for you. Hope you understand that it was not the guides fault but rather the guy he was working for. A 50 inch bull your brother got is Ok but not for a Yukon moose. I spoke with a guide here from Maine that went to Alalska last year to work as a guide. The outfitter dumped him in unfamilar territory as well without much sign. It was a 12 day hunt and they only saw one bull the entire hunt. It was on the last day and it was a 56 inch. I have spoken with some outfitters in Alalska and some are up front others are telling me what your outfitter did. The truthful ones are saying that Alalska is kinda shot up and not consistently producing the big bulls and it appears that the Yukon is the going the same way.

Greetings from Whitehorse, JP,
Thanks for sending that. I'm extremely sorry to hear that your hunt
went so badly - the way you have the situation documented, I have no
doubt that you're not "just a whiner" (I sometimes hear from folks
who just had unrealistic expectations or demands). You definitely
didn't get what you contracted for, and I'll keep this filed and in
mind for when I get asked about Yukon guides.
I'm also sorry to hear that none of the organizations which exist to
promote tourism saw fit to respond to you - a good example of my tax
dollars at work :(
I've now posted a commentary about your hunt and associated problems
on my blog at http://www.explorenorth.com/wordpress/ (it gets over
200 visitors a day on average).
When you say that nothing came of your complaint to the outfitters'
association, what does that mean? I assume that they replied to you
but took no action.

Moosehunter I feel for you pal, I hunted with Darwin Watson when he had Christina Falls Outfitting in 1980 or so and it was a disaster as well, my guide had never been in the area and i was his first client, we had to walk everywhere we went account Darwin wouldn't let the guy have any horses, he was a terrible wrangler, hollar and kick and beat the horses with sticks I finally ask him to stop and I would handle any of the horse business, which was only the first day or so. I did see a few moose but no shot opertunites, I was on a Bowhunt. Darwin has a very cavalier attutude about his hunts, I don;'t think he understands that we save for years for these hunts and can't go anytime we want to.
